Starting a Silver Coin Collection
Beginning a collection of silver coins can be a great way to build up an investment for the future and to enjoy a beautiful little piece of history. Most rare coins have interesting histories, so they come with stories that are fun to tell as you’re showing off your collection. Before you begin collecting, though, there are a few things that you should know.
First of all, be sure that you know about collecting coins before you start dumping money into them. A classic uninformed beginner’s mistake is to pay way too much for a coin that has been over-graded – or has been rated more highly than it ought to be – only to find out about the mistake when it’s too late. Before you buy any coins, buy books about the silver coins you’re interested in and study up on which types are most valuable and why. It might also be a good idea to check out a general coin collecting book, which can give you more information about things like fineness and rarity.
Secondly, be sure that you go about building your collection slowly. Starting off small is usually the best way to begin anything, and this is no less true of coin collecting. Find rare silver coins that interest you, but don’t automatically buy the finest, rarest, most expensive coins on the market. Instead, take some time to build up your collection with coins that are more common so that you can build up to buying more expensive coins, which take more thought and knowledge, anyway.
